Finding every f'ing silver lining
What’s been on my mind after my 15 year lupus anniversary in December. Post- lupus diagnosis, I felt so small. Like I was a nobody “anymore” - diminished and fully distressed 24/7. I lost my identify, a massive amount of weight, my career path and my independence. I couldn’t drive, barely walk, couldn’t cook, do laundry or make my bed.I was on so much physical pain so of course I couldn’t sleep and the tears would come up anytime I realized how abnormal my life had instantly

From victim to victor (how yoga has helped soften my anger and look my pain the eye)
Over the years I’ve come to understand that the emotions I cultivate in my yoga practice transfer off the mat. Yoga allows me to feel my feelings and also helps me to feel my pain. It makes me so hyper aware of myself and it’s a place where I can’t run and hide either and so I'm faced with these feelings head on. Sometimes literally head on. During a yoga practice when you’re that tuned in, you notice every little part both physically and emotionally. Using yoga as a healing

The one minute breath also known as the mother of all breath work practices
My favorite breath work practice which is quick and effective is the one minute breath. I've been using and teaching this technique for years and have found it especially helpful as a mom. I remember using this technique when Olivia was a baby and despised bath time (what baby doesn't like splashing around in the water??) Without fail she threw a massive fit especially when it came to washing her hair and I would need a way to calm myself down in order to get the job done! I

Meet me for a matcha?
The benefits of matcha are plentiful! A good cup of matcha is not only delicious but also high in antioxidants and may: *boost brain function *reduce inflammation *lower blood pressure *lower cholesterol While I love my morning cup of coffee, if you are looking for an alternative, matcha is a good bet. It's also a nice pick me up with less caffeine and both warming and grounding. Perfect for this time of year. Fun fact: matcha is a type of green tea! If you live locally and a

What to do when 7:30pm is both your bedtime and your reservation time?
If you struggle with fatigue, hear me out on this one! Last night we had a 7:30pm reservation with friends. To most people going out at this hour is totally no big deal. You probably wouldn’t even give it a second thought, right? But if you’ve struggled in the past or currently struggle with fatigue, it’s another story. Now don’t get me wrong my energy compared to the last decade is sky high, but I definitely run out of steam by the end of the day and I am probably asleep by

Exciting news from RL Wellness!
The moms have spoken! Beginning Tuesday, August 16th at 9:30am , I will be teaching a weekly yoga class for busy moms. If you are in the area and looking to sneak in some morning yoga, please email me at roxanne@roxannelerner.com to sign up. Throw in a big move, a change in my professional life, a traveling husband and hello insomnia! However, by leaning heavily on my y

The power of being present and letting go of resentment (at an ungodly hour)!
The time is 6:15am and I've been up for an hour and a half with my three year old son, Nathan. I used to fight these early morning wake up calls and became resentful (of an unnamed person still sleeping - wink wink). Through my mindfulness practice, I'm able to connect with my breath and let go of negative emotions. When you continue to come back to the present moment (using your breath as an anchor) you can notice that most of the time absolutely nothing is wrong in the here

Giving props (and a complimentary class in August)
Have you ever tried using props during yoga? You know, the brightly colored blocks and blankets, bolsters and straps you typically find stacked up along the back wall of a yoga studio? If not, I am here to let you know that yoga props are not just for beginners! I encourage you to try incorporating blocks into your yoga practice and notice what you feel. More spacious perhaps? A little bit longer and more stretched out? For all of my restorative yoga junkies, get yourself a b

Always with a side of mindfulness
It's very easy to feel lost and overwhelmed when you have a chronic illness. For me, simple and routine with a side of mindfulness is key. For my clients, I create an "empowerment backpack" filled with quick and effective tools to help set them up for success aka a healthy mind and body! A 5 minute meditation or a healthy snack idea is what I'm referring to. It's not complicated but it's effective in changing the way you take care of yourself. Every single day. This will lift
